The National Theatre has confirmed that new shows Caroline, Or Change, The Alchemist and The Seafarer will open as part of the August-October season. Musical Caroline, Or Change joins The Voysey Inheritance and The Seagull in the Lyttelton, The Alchemist is staged as part of the Travelex £10 season in the Olivier, and new play The Seafarer joins The Overwhelming and Exiles in the smaller Cottesloe.

Caroline, Or Change boasts a cast including Clive Rowe and Ian Lavender, and is set in a stormy world, addressing issues of race and human rights. 1963 Louisiana: Caroline, a black maid to a southern Jewish family, struggles both emotionally and economically. The family's son is also struggling to understand the world in the aftermath of his mother's death. The production is directed by American George C Wolfe, who directed the show when it first opened in New York. Caroline, Or Change opens on 19 October, following previews from 10 October.

Nicholas Hytner, the National Theatre's Director, takes charge of Ben Jonson's The Alchemist, which previews from 8 September before opening on 14 September. Jonson's tale of con artists raking in money from clients who believe they are actually alchemists features a cast including Alex Jennings and Simon Russell Beale (who work together for the first time in this production), Lesley Manville and Ian Richardson.

As previously announced, Ron Cook, Conleth Hill, Karl Johnson and Jim Norton will star in The Seafarer, Conor McPherson's debut show at the National, which McPherson will also direct. The Seafarer opens on 28 September, following previews from 20 September. Public booking for all of these shows opens on 13 July.

Following its success working with Shunt, the National Theatre is also collaborating with Punchdrunk on a site-specific production of Faust to be staged in an abandoned archive near Tower Bridge from 10 October-18 November.

A UK tour of The Caucasian Chalk Circle has been announced for January-March 2007. The NT Education mobile production of Brecht's morality play will be directed by Sean Holmes and will play a limited run at the Cottesloe in March 2007 as part of the tour.

The National Theatre has also committed to refurbishing the NT Studio in Waterloo between August 2006 and October 2007. When the project is completed the building will have a second workshop space, new dance and music theatre facilities and new facilities for writers. It will also provide a permanent home for the NT archive. In the meantime the work of the NT Studio will go on, thanks to assistance from ITV, at rehearsal rooms near the Oval.
