A new musical based on a book by E&P Editor Greg Mitchell, "The Campaign of the Century," will receive a showcase performance in California this Sunday. It recently won the 2006 California Musical Theater Award.

The book, winner of the Goldsmith Book Prize, explored Upton Sinclair's uproarious, and nearly successful, race for governor of California in 1934 on the End Poverty in California (EPIC) platform. The campaign marked the birth of many modern media campaign techniques, incredible "dirty tricks," and the first major involvement of Hollywood in an election.

The musical, which has been showcased previously in New York, Chicago and San Jose, is co-written by Robert L. Freedman and Steven Lutvak (pictured). Last month they shared $50,000 in winning the Kleban Award for lyric writing.

"Campaign of the Century" this Sunday will star noted TV and film actor John Rubinstein as Sinclair. It will take place at 2 p.m. at the Salter Family Theatre, 241 Moreno Drive, Beverly Hills 90212. Tickets are free but reservations needed.
