Synopsis / Notes

THE TUTOR is an award-winning musical comedy about love, art, and what it really takes to get into Princeton.

Edmund, a tormented young novelist, makes his living tutoring rich kids with bad grades and Ivy League ambitions. His newest client is Sweetie Finley, a pierced-nose teen with a goth wardrobe, a bad attitude, and two stressed-out Upper East Side parents. Sweetie would much rather hang out with her stoner boyfriend than study, but when she becomes Edmund's creative muse, his novel literally starts to come to life.

As Sweetie's tough attitude melts into a secret crush and Edmund's creative juices flow, Edmund unwittingly breaks Sweetie's heart, and she runs away from home. As a result, her parents must confront the truth about their marriage, Sweetie learns the true meaning of friendship, and Edmund (with an unexpected assist from the protagonist of his novel) finally leaves his fantasy world behind and starts to become the hero of his own life.

THE TUTOR is the only three-time winner of the American Academy of Arts and Letters' prestigious Richard Rodgers Award, earning a Staged Reading Award in 2002, a Studio Production Award in 2003, and a Production Award in 2004. The show was first developed at the O'Neill Music Theatre Conference and has subsequently been staged in the New Works Now! Festival at The Public Theatre, in a workshop production at the York Theatre, and in a full showcase production at 59E59 Theatres in New York City as part of Prospect Theatre Company's 2005-06 season. THE TUTOR was also selected for The Village Theatre's "Village Originals" festival of new works in Issaquah, Washington, where it won "Best of Fest."
