Michael L. Cooper

Michael L. Cooper is the recipient of the 2005 Jonathan Larson Performing Arts Foundation Award, Daryl Roth Award, and Daniel Marshall Multicultural Award for Musical Theatre (TRU New Voices Series) and a member of the Dramatists Guild and BMI Workshop. He has worked both on and off-Broadway (VISITING MR. GREEN, assisting director Lonny Price; A CLASS ACT Tokyo Pre-Production, assisting librettist Linda Kline). Other productions include: "Ready or Not" (Producer, Music and Lyrics), Thirteenth Night's "Love's Labor's Lost" (Sound Design and Original Music), and a holiday album (written and produced with Phoebe Geer).

A Native of Nogales, Arizona, Michael received his BA (in Theatre, 2001) from Williams College and his MFA from New York University's Tisch Graduate Musical Theatre Writing Program. At NYU, he wrote the book and lyrics for "Sunfish," with composer Hyeyoung Kim, "The Story of An Hour," with composer Joshua Salzman, and "The Strange Affair of Dr. Crippen," with composer David Mallamud. "Sunfish," was a finalist in the Alliance Theatre's Kendeda Graduate Playwriting Competition and received its world premiere student production at Yale University (February 2005). "Sunfish," was next workshopped as part of the WriteAct Festival of New Works (May 2005, directed by Lonny Price) at New York University's Graduate Acting Program. "The Strange Affair of Dr. Crippen" was featured in the 2005 Stages Festival of New Musicals at the Theatrebuilding Chicago (August 2005).
